We read in the Wine-ing Your Way Across Kentucky book that it was a great one to visit so we made sure to get to it on our trip. When we arrived, it was apparent they were in the process of doing some work.
Wine Review: Purple Toad Winery Black & Bruised. A combination of blackberry and concord grape wine. The name “Purple Toad Winery” originated from the color of your toes when grapes were pressed the old fashioned way. We combine modern wine making techniques with old world knowledge to produce award winning wines.
It looks like they will have a much nicer place once that is done. When they found out it was my wife's birthday day, they gave her a souvenir glass.
We liked the black and bruised wine so much, alone with a few others, that we bought half a case! Next time we pass this way, or even close, we'll be sure to make the time to visit again. We had purchased some Purple Toad wines in our local liquor stores but when we were planning a trip to Land Between The Lakes we wanted to visit the winery.
We were not disappointed. The tasting is free and you can sample as many or as few wines as you like.
They have lots of cute items to purchase in addition to wines. In addition to buying a case of wine we bought shirts, glasses and wine cork cages. All priced very reasonably.
The server, Beth was super friendly and helpful with our choices of wines. This place was busy with people stopping in and buying cases of wine as well as other people just stopping in for a wine tasting. Highly recommended!
We moved to the Paducah area last Fall and just got around to stopping at the Purple Toad for a wine tasting last Saturday. We should have gone sooner- what a great place! There was a wedding reception going on in the banquet area so the place was hopping! But we were immediately greeted and told we could taste everything we wanted for free!
That's a great concept- I tasted more wines than I normally would have this way before I made a decision to buy a glass to drink and a few bottles to take home. The owners, June and Allen were very friendly and helpful. Allen gave us an impromptu tour of the wine making process in the back when he heard that we made some wine at home an were interested in how he did things.
His operation is very impressive, especially for someone that has only been doing this commercially for about 6 years! There is quite a variety of wines.
So jump over the side to the bottom part. With the closed gate on your left (you can now open it from this side), go to the nightmare bed in the corner and click to activate the nightmare maze. However, before you do that, notice the lower area beneath the wooden support on your right. Wolfenstein the old blood. This is the secret area where the nightmare bed is.
All the ones I tasted were good. I would have to say that their offerings lean a bit more to the sweet, fruity wines than the drys. I normally drink mostly dry whites but I found I really enjoyed the sweeter fruit wines too. We brought home a bottle of the 'Black and Bruised' and the 'Cabernet Franc' to drink at home. It was a great visit.
We will definitely be back often.
