Characteristics of the Feudal World. Timeline The Middle Ages or medieval time is believed to have started with the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 and to have lasted about 1,000 years until about 1450. The beginning of the Middle Ages is called the Dark Ages because the great civilizations of Rome and Greece had been conquered. The basic government and society in Europe during the middle ages was based around the feudal system. Small communities were formed around the local lord and the manor. The lord owned the land and everything in it. He would keep the peasants safe in return for their service. The lord, in return, would provide the king with soldiers or taxes.

Serfs were peasants who worked the land and provided surplus goods and taxes to the lord and his vassals. Advantages, But Not For Everyone. A variety of social changes and events led to the eventual decline of the feudal system. With increased trade came centralized growth in towns, so peasants were able to leave their land and pursue their own means of income.

This was certainly an advantage for the peasants, but was a disadvantage to the lords who relied on the peasants hard work for their own material wealth. The overall drawback here was that the reliance on land and agriculture was used to determine economic relationships, and when that reliance shifted to allow the lower classes to gain self-sufficiency, feudalism faded out and eventually ended.
